Emergency Medicine ​Rotations

First Year

The first month of the EM-1 year is Emergency Medicine Orientation. All EM-1 residents participate in orientation activities followed by clinical time in the ED. During this month, EM-1s work a light clinical schedule so they may have ample time to become acclimated. This month includes a variety of activities and social events to help our new residents become acclimated to Middle Tennessee and the hospital and to become acquainted with their new resident colleagues. Residents will also participate in ACLS, ATLS, and PALS courses.

The first year of our residency program consists of rotations in emergency medicine, adult and pediatric critical care, obstetrics, anesthesiology, and emergency ultrasound.

• Emergency Medicine - 8 months (includes EM orientation 1st month) (20, 9.5 hour shifts/month)
• Critical Care - 1 month
• OB/GYN - 1 month
• Anesthesiology and ED Ultrasound - 1 month
• EMS and Research - 1 month
• Vacation - 3 weeks

Second Year

The second year of our residency program consists of rotations in emergency medicine, critical care, trauma, and EMS/Research. EM-2 residents also have 1 month of elective time. The focus of the EM-2 year is to build on the fund of knowledge acquired in the first year, with increasing focus on management of the critically ill. EM-2 residents are expected to take on an increased level of responsibility in the ED.

• Emergency Medicine - 8 months (19, 9.5 hour shifts/month)

• Vacation - 3 weeks

Third Year

The final year of our emergency medicine rotations consists of emergency medicine and critical care. EM-3 residents also have 1 month of elective time. EM-3 residents will have increased clinical responsibilities, especially regarding leading resuscitations, managing ED flow, and supervising medical students.

• Emergency Medicine - 10 months (18, 9.5 hour shifts/month) (will include teaching shifts where teaching is primary responsibility)
• Critical Care - 1 month 
• Elective - 1 month
• Vacation - 3 weeks

Overall Program Rotations

Emergency Medicine: 26 months (includes EM orientation month); Critical Care: 4 months (1 month PICU, 3 months ICU); Trauma: 1 month; OB/GYN: 1 month; Anesthesiology / ED Ultrasound: 1 month; EMS and Research: 1 month; Electives: 2 months; and 3 weeks of vacation per year.
